Unit # 5 IN THE NEWS

Name Three

ESL EFL Reading and Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 30 Minutes

In this fun card game, students practice making sentences using the past and present passive. The class is divided into groups of three or four and each group is given a set of cards. Students take it in turns to turn over a card and make a sentence by completing the gap with the passive form of the verb in brackets. The student then reads out the sentence to the group, e.g. Name three books which were made/have been made into films. The other group members then race to answer by naming three things belonging to the category. The first student to do this successfully keeps the card. The student with the most cards at the end of the game is the winner. Afterwards, there is a class feedback session to go through the questions and possible answers with the class.

Passive Descriptions

ESL EFL Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 25 Minutes

In this enjoyable card game, students describe objects using the present passive. In small groups, students take it in turns to pick up a picture card and describe the object on the card to the other students using the present passive. For example, if a student picked up a picture of a dictionary, the student might say: It's made from paper. It's used in the classroom. It's bought by students, etc. The first student to guess the object wins the card. The winner is the student with the most cards at the end of the activity.

Passive Snap

ESL EFL Reading, Listening and Matching Activity - Pre-intermediate - 30 Minutes

In this amusing card game, students play a game of snap by matching active and passive sentences that have the same meaning. To begin, the class is divided into pairs. The pairs write down five active sentences and their passive equivalents. When they have finished, each pair joins with another pair to make a group of four. Pairs then take it in turns to read out a sentence (active or passive) for the other pair to provide the active or passive equivalent. After that, each group of four is given a set of active and passive sentence cards. The students take it in turns to turn over a card and read it aloud to the group. The other students listen and try to find a card that has the same meaning already on the table. If there is such a card, the first person to shout 'Snap', and place a hand on the card wins the pair of cards. If there is no match, the student places the card face up on the table. The student with the most cards wins. As an extension, students can play a pelmanism game with the cards.

Processes

ESL EFL Lesson - Pre-intermediate -  1 Hour +
This detailed lesson is perfect for teaching students how to describe processes using the passive. Students begin by practicing the passive voice structure. Then, they are introduced to sequence words and shown how to write a process in stages. Finally, students work in pairs and write two processes using the passive. These processes are then presented to the class.
